Subject: Fwd: DARPA Grand Challenge Questionnaire

We are seeking feedback regarding Grand Challenge 2005, and looking for suggestions regarding a possible future Grand Challenge involving autonomous vehicles operating in urban areas.   Your comments regarding
areas that could be improved are particularly welcomed.

The attached questionnaire is also available at www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge.  We will be tallying results on January 13, 2006, so if possible, please return forms before then.

Please forward this message to any members of the Grand Challenge community we may have missed.

Thank you for your help and continued support of the DARPA
Grand Challenge.

Mobile Robot Software Competition

This month we will begin organizing the first annual Mobile Robot Software Competition !

We have scheduled a kickoff workshop on January to identify interested participants and help teams organize:

Once your teams form, you will want to:

  • Identify an inexpensive mobile robot base that you can put together with a minimum of time and effort.

  • Select the appropriate sensor.

  • Integrate the robot base and sensors with your computer(s).

  • Conceive, design, develop, and test the algorithms that you will use to tackle the robotics problems.

Please contact me ASAP if you would like to define the challenge problems or develop robots that will be able to rise above these technical hurdles.

22 December Update: We have scheduled a kickoff meeting for Tuesday January 10th.  This will be an excellent opportunity for interested participants to organize into teams and begin the adventure!

Technical Mentors  Needed for Local FIRST Teams

I have been contacted by several high school FIRST teams in the Portland area.  They are looking for technical mentors, particularly mechanical and electrical engineers.  FIRST contests primarily involve the construction (from scratch) and teleoperation of robots.  Sort of like "Robot" Wars minus the Wars.
